McMarijuana? Are Dispensary Franchises Coming to Florida in 2018

Independently owned dispensary franchises may be here by next year.

If you’re one of the countless Floridians who have felt locked out of the marijuana industry there is some hope on the horizon: Dispensary Franchises. A new Bill introduced by Senator Perry E. Thurston (D) paves the way for entrepreneurs, companies and organizations to own and operate medical marijuana retail stores.

Franchisees would only be allowed to own a single retail location and must source all of it’s cannabis products from one of the licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTC) and those products cannot be repackaged. Under SB1336 dispensary franchisees would be required to have their own Medical Director on staff, as well as carry an insurance policy.

Applications to own one of these medical marijuana franchises would begin being accepted on August 18, 2018. The 2018 legislative session begins in Tallahassee on January 9, 2018.

If the Bill is enacted into law it would be a major game changer for the current medical marijuana market in Florida. Currently only MMTCs are licensed to cultivate marijuana and they must also handle all of their own processing, distribution and sales. Each MMTC can open up to 25 retail stores, however they have been restricted from partnering with 3rd parties to own or operate these facilities.

The passage of SB1336 and allowance of Dispensary Franchises would decrease the financial burden of opening multiple locations for an the MMTCs and increase the amount of opportunities for aspiring “dispensary” owners.

Anyone seeking a better understanding of the rules, how they are changing and how that might affect business opportunities is encouraged to attend a special event at FIU in Miami this February. The People’s Marijuana Event is bringing all the cannabis education, connections and networking together for one Super CannaDay. Passes are just $25 through Dec 31st.
